Watercolours consist of paint pigments suspended in a mixture of binder and additives and water. It is water-soluble. These can be in concentrated liquid - normally supplied in tube form. Otherwise, they may be in the form of solid as in small cake of colours sitting in a tray or shallow box. In solid form, there will be many colours in a box. Watercolour in the form of Pan paints (which actually are small dried cakes or bars of paint in an open plastic tray contained in a metallic container) and are sold in 12-colours, 24-colours or even 36-colours combination. This is the norm in most cases as they are easy to pack and transport. Water is the solvent to use to thin or dilute the paint for application. Normally, a brush is used to apply these watercolours to paper as in the form of action called painting.
Watercolours are very transparent and they need to be applied to white paper or watercolour paper. Watercolour paper, due to absorbency issue, essentially lets the paint sit on top of the paper until it dries. Watercolor paper is cold press paper and often made entirely or partially with cotton and this gives the surface the appropriate texture, appearance and minimizes distortion when wet.
One can control the shade of any colour by adjusting the amount of water on the brush before dipping in the colour cake and applying to the paper. Watercolour is easy to mix, simply dab some of the pigment onto a slick surface, then do the same with another pigment and then add it to the first pigment. Mix the two colours and there you have a new colour.
The B-7129/24 Water Colour Set consists of 24 cakes of water colours, sitting on a plastic tray and packed in a re-usable metallic box and shrink-wrapped. Essentially, this is a starter set for beginners. There are basically only 24 colours and this is the best combinations of colours. The paints have no lead in it, non-toxic, and are suitable for use by children as well. There is also a brush included in the box. These are the basic essential items to start the beginners to do the painting and colouring. Watercolour paints can be used on watercolour paper, or white paper or even rice paper as long as they are not too absorbent. Sketch pad is one type of paper that can be used with watercolour paints.
